Sewing for Beginners

Fancy learning to sew, but don't know where to start? Or maybe you are returning to sewing and need to get to grips with the basics again? This course is designed for the absolute beginner or anyone lacking confidence in the basic operations of the sewing machine. Completing a project every session, I will help you to build your skills and confidence so you are able to make a range of useful and decorative items for your home, yourself or to give as gifts.​

By the time you have completed the course you will be able to:

wind a bobbin and thread the machine ready for sewing.

stitch in a straight line and around corners.

stitch a hem by machine
-
know how to sew safely.

make a button hole using a 4 part method on your machine.

hand sew a button onto fabric.

Insert a zip
-
Apply decorative trim and bias binding

Make a patch pocket
-
Use an overlocker to finish raw edges

design and make an envelope pillow case
-
sew a lined tote bag - maybe you could keep your sewing projects in it?
-
create a zippered pencil case/makeup bag
-
make an apron

Every Wednesday 17th November- 8th December 2021 10am-12:30pm
at Brynmill Community Centre, Swansea.

You will need:
Week 1: Envelope Pillow case
Up to 3 coordinated fabrics, 1.2 meters of fabric in total
Gutterman sew-all thread in a colour that coordinates with your fabric.
Week 2: Lined tote bag
Week 3: Zippered Pencil Case
Week 4: Apron
I will send precise details of fabric requirements with the course information pack.

Or: why not purchase a "Beginner's Sewing" Kit, including all the things you need to complete the project, and a few extra goodies which will allow you to use up any excess fabric and practise you skills at home. Kits must be ordered at least 6 working days before the course starts.
